It goes without saying that installing a Don-Bar fireplace inside the Ice-Hotel located in Quebec, Canada would represent a very interesting challenge.
Unique in North America, the Ice-Hotel is a seasonal tourist attraction; a spectacular ice structure designed like a gothic cathedral.
But don't be fooled, because it is a real hotel with 32 rooms and themed suites, conceived to welcome visitors having the desire to live an out-of-the-ordinary experience.
Our challenge was to install a Don-Bar 9000 series central fireplace inside one suite.
Howerver, when you think Don-Bar, you also think of heat. Our fireplace not only had to heat but light the room as well, without elevating the room temperature to a point where the compacted snow structure would melt.
Thus we modified a 9000 series fireplace to those particular and highly unusual circumstances.
The fireplace hood, which normally releases a lot of heat by radiation, had to be completely redesigned and insulated with a double wall assembly, made with a high temperature insulator, at its center.
The glass spark-guards were also replaced by insulated glass panes with a sealed air space.
Furthermore, the chimney had to go through the snow roof. The chimney temperature had to be kept under the freezing point to ensure there would be no risks of "rain" in the room.We therefore installed a highly insulated wall radiation shield. We also ventilated that shield to make sure the room temperature was kept below the freezing point.
The Ice-Hotel visitors were able to marvel at a superb flame all through the winter without the fear of having the roof fall on their heads!
This shows just how much Don-Bar can customize its fireplaces to meet the specific requirements of each project.
